Air France 447 missing over Atlantic

Airbus a330-200

static wick fitted on the wing are meant to dissipate electricity.

Details are emerging about the disappearance of an Air France flight from Brazil to France in the early hours of Monday.

Flight AF 447 left Rio de Janeiro, bound for Paris, at 1900 local time (2200 GMT) on Sunday 31 May.

The aircraft, an Airbus A330-200 with registration F-GZCP, had been in operation since April 2005.

Shortly after the aircraft's scheduled arrival time in Paris of 1110 local time (0910 GMT), it was announced that the flight was missing.

French aviation officials have said they may never find the flight data recorders of an Air France jet that went missing over the Atlantic.

The officials promised a thorough investigation but said the circumstances were very difficult.

Flight AF 447 was heading from Rio to Paris with 228 people on board on Monday when it was lost over the ocean.

Debris has been spotted 650km (400 miles) off Brazil's coast and navy vessels are converging on the area.

'Worst catastrophe'

The French civil aviation officials, at a news conference in Paris, said they hoped there would be an initial report by the end of June.

The officials, headed by Paul-Louis Arslanian, chief of the French civil aviation ministry's bureau of investigation, said there had appeared to be no problems with the flight before take-off.

Mr Arslanian said there would be no speculation and that it was "essential we check and verify everything".

He said: "This catastrophe - which is the worst that our country has witnessed in terms of aviation, took place in a very difficult region... so the investigation will not be easy... but we are not giving up."

Mr Arslanian said the exact time of the accident was not known, nor whether the chief pilot was at the controls.

It is possible that the fury of an equatorial storm brought down Air France flight 447.

The plane's flight path seems to have taken it through what meteorologists call the inter-tropical convergence zone.

This is where two air masses meet, sending huge storm clouds more than 40,000ft (12,000m) into the sky.

Eight years ago, former British Airways captain Roger Guiver was confronted with an enormous storm during a flight from Cape Town to London Heathrow.

"You take weather like that extremely seriously," he says. "You don't go anywhere near it."

There are two potential dangers - lightning and severe turbulence.

Lightning

Lightning can strike anywhere - the charge flows around the plane's skin and can damage electrical systems.

But aircraft wings have what are called "static wicks"(picture shown above) which dissipate the electricity safely.

Bored, long-haul passengers looking out of the window at the wings will spot them - thin, aerial-like structures, trailing in the slipstream.

Roger Guiver says one dramatic warning of a possible lightning strike is St Elmo's Fire - static that flickers over the windscreen as the plane flies through a storm.

But lightning almost never causes air crashes, at least directly.

The respected Aviation Safety Network database lists just 15 incidents in more than 50 years of aviation history.

The worst was the loss of an Iranian Air Force Boeing 747 in 1976 near Madrid. Lightning ignited vapour in a fuel tank, causing an explosion.

Electrical faults

If lightning did strike AF 447, it is more likely to have caused the electrical faults mentioned in automated maintenance messages which were sent out over a satellite network shortly before the plane disappeared.

But electrical problems might in turn have resulted in the crew losing vital control systems, or a fire.

The pilot's main weapon against turbulence is weather radar - the receiver mounted in the nose of the aircraft can pick up signs of storm clouds ahead, which are displayed in the cockpit.

Crews aim to fly at least 10 miles (16km) around the worst storms, for reasons of safety and passenger comfort.

But it is not an exact science. Weather radars detect moisture primarily, and sometimes struggle to identify ice crystals, which can be present in the worst storm clouds.

At night, storms cannot easily be seen by eye.

Turbulence

Pilots try to avoid ending up in big storm clouds because of the forces they can impose on a plane.

At cruising height, the plane must be kept to precise speeds - the altitude means changes of speed can cause stalling.

But in a storm, the plane can be lifted up or thrown down in the turbulence, making it difficult for the autopilot to fly within the limits.

"It's not frightening for us, but it's awful for the passengers at the back," says Roger Guiver.

Investigators will want to discover if the Air France Airbus suffered such severe turbulence that it caused catastrophic structural damage - the loss of a rudder, engine mounting, or even a broken wing.

This would be extremely rare.

The wings on newly designed aircraft are literally tested to destruction by bending them at least 50% beyond the kinds of forces produced in a storm.

As ever with air accident investigations, finding the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder is key.

They may be up to thousands of metres below the surface.

But the US National Transportation Safety Board says the homing beacons they carry should be detectable down to 14,000ft (4,300m).

Retrieving them is tricky but, as military salvage experts point out, these

days there is no place on the ocean floor where remotely operated vehicles cannot go.

The boxes and key sections of wreckage could be winched up, so that investigators can begin the task of explaining the fate of flight AF 447.

25th of May

Greetings. I've skipped lots of post due to my laziness. Never mind , I'll summarize it date by date if i still remember what I've done :)

21th Of May- As Usual .. attend classes in the morning and flying after lunch . Today, i suppose to fly 1 hour mutual and 1 hour solo but something changed and occur during our training. 1P.M sign aircraft technical log and authorization sheets. Me and my room mate HUZAINI done all those pre-flight checks and finally line up runway 08 with 9M-APV at 1:20P.M. I was PIC during the first flight and Huzaini will be PIC after me. During my flight, everything goes normal. just the fuel pressure was slightly below than what v used to fly with, but it still within a GREEN ARCH in the indicator. As i said, after my flight done Huzaini changed seat with me on the ground. We took off as usual . after passing 300ft Flaps up, landing lights off and fuel pump off. 500ft right turn out and proceed to our training area BOVI we been told to climb 2000ft initially so we comply with ATC instructions. During climb, we check our engine instrument and found out fuel pressure are lower then my flight and almost to the critical zone. Huzaini ask me to switch on the fuel pump. PA28-161 have 2 fuel pump 1 one driven by engine and another one is electrically driven also what we call an emergency fuel pump. The electrical fuel pump was switched on. we can see the fuel pressure coming up again. Huzaini asked me to switch off the elecrical fuel pump because prolong of the usage may damage the engine driven fuel pump. I called out fuel pump off check fuel pressure. Huzaini said it's coming down again, let's go back. GOOD IDEA i said. he request rejoin and head back to the airport with fuel pump on. After we land, we called our maintainance JAZE to check what happen with the aircraft. What happen to our aircraft ? ask me personally.

22th of May- Today schedule says that me and FITRI go night flying and of course with instructors. 1 bad news for us is 9M-APV's (the aircraft i flew on 21th of May) alternator are not serviceable and she was grounded. So after morning classes, we can go back to our so called hostel and have some rest. i took a long nap was about 4 hours, woke up 4PM and head to the hanger at 5PM. Fitri go for the 1st sorty of night flying today. i request my instructor to join the flight as a passenger behind and take video. My CAM skills are sucks anyway show u the video below.

My 20th Birthday

Happy Birthday Lucas.

Everyone was asking where am i going to celebrate my birthday. Unfortunately, my birthday was Tuesday. Not a fine day for party, everyone needs to wake up early morning the next day specially me. But, it's still fine, i went to Black Jack last Saturday night with some of my Sandakan's gang and Felix my course mate. THANKS GUYS !! I HAD LOTS OF FUN THAT NIGHTS.

19th of May. My Actual birth-date. i woke up early in the morning because i need to attend ground class. I saw lots of Text Message in my inbox. i had to said again, Thanks for those wishes. i appreciate every single word. After class, Felix, James and I plan went to dinner at Pizza Hut. After Dinner, we went Jesselton Cafe because Felix need to meet his high school classmate. It was heavy rain that night. They laught at me and said i'm stingy. WHY ? only chinese will know why specially HAKKA.

It will be a unforgetful birthday for me. I did something very extraordinary that night. let's take a look on the picture below.

Have you ever seen a Birthday elephant TILTED the chair in a cafe with his ass? HA HA

20th of May, Woke up early morning again , attend class in the morning after lunch. headed to airport, our school's hanger. i signed the Tech log and Authorisation's sheet and walked toward to the aircraft and starts our pre-flight check. Again, 1 hour mutual and 1 hour solo. i'm bored of it already. I'm waiting for night flying and navigation cross country. i've saw our 5 hours duration flight plan.

16th of May

Finally, 9M-APV burst its hours. She have to grounded for service . Jaze our engineering from ADMAL .

Unlimited visibility, clear horizontal line. I took this picture because it just looks nice .

What is this ? it's brake and rudder paddle. both metal paddle are brakes. Apply pressure on the left metal, the left main under carriage will brake vice verse. And the rubber peddles below are used to control rudder movement.

Bad weather .

These are what we found overhead us. The red lights is used for night flying.
If wearing a headset is not comfortable for you, switch it to the speakers. Any ATC instructions and communication from station to station are able to listen from here if u activate the speaker.

This is the microphone. press and hold with your thumb when u transmit .

The black one is a throttle lever and the red one is the mixture lever .

Circuit breaker in Piper Pa28-161

Cockpit layout from 9M-APR. It's looks nicer than 9M-APV. So, Where's the BOX1 ? read my previous post then you'll know why .

Yesterday 15th of May. I gain my first hour of night flying, the feeling were totally different. sorry no picture because i flew with my instructor. Weather yesterday was not so nice, We took off nearly 5 thirty PM and proceed to our training area. We Did some instrument rate one turn , rate descent turn . Rate one turn means by turn 180 degree heading within 1 minute approx 15 degree of bank. Descent turn with 1 min means . descent down 500ft and make a 180 degree turn with 1 minute.

Next Monday we will continue our ground class again because we had burst both aircraft hours.

14th of May

Yeah . It's Sandakan Golf Club .

Sandakan Golf Club. i guess it was about 1000Ft before turning right base RWY 08

Sandakan Harbour. 2oooFT

NAM TUNG area of Sandakan .

Pu Chi Shi temple . it's a very nice temple . i went there few times before .

Another picture of Pu Chi Shi temple.

Mutual with my friend Gurjeet call-sign (IFAS 55). He was PIC during this flight.

Sandakan Air Traffic Control Tower . Sorry . i have no idea what was showing in the first monitor. I guess those are the switches to turn on/off those light on the runway. I guess the second monitor showing the surface wind condition .

Yeah this one interesting... this is the RADIO STACKS. by turning those knob, u can select frequency you want.
BOX1 BOX 2 (top and below on the left hand side) 123.20 APPROACH frequency. Sandakan only used one frequency.
BOX1 BOX2 (right hand side) 109.30 ILS(instrument landing standart) 114.00 VSN( VOR Sandakan, we need to select this frequency to navigation. It will show our radial or DME (distance measure equipment)
The BOX below is transponder. Switching this on, ur aircraft will appear in the RADAR SCREEN. this equipment is compulsory for commercial aircraft which fitted with TCAS(traffic alert and collision avoidance system)

Fuel Cap on the right wing.

Bahala Island

Bahala island . 2000Ft

PPL licent (private pilot licent) this licent allow u to fly and buy an aircraft BUT according to the airlaw you're not allowed to earn money commercially.

Sandakan Terminal Building it's looks small. But, Staff working here are so nice and polite. specially ATC, i learnt alot from them.

Cute Drawing, HUZAINI my room mate draw this on the white board during lunch time.

Finally, i had flown 14 hours on PA28-161. This aircraft gradually become more comfortable for me and of course i enjoy flying with it. 13th of May (YESTERDAY) was our hanger's opening ceremony, we made a crash training i was not told to join the aircraft during the training because i'm too fat. haha, my size or weight are not convinient to join. but it's fine for me, i rather sitting inside the hanger. It was so hot yesterday. let's straight to the point, Capt Htun performed a normal landing and declare MAYDAY. Actually distress call should be made before we landed on the ground. Once pilot declared a distress call , ATC will inform FIRE FIGHTER and AMBULANCE. Firstly, fire fighter will be ready on the holding point until the aircraft touch down it begins to roll until the end of the runway. At this time , Fire fighter will directly following behind the aircraft with high speed. i will show u a bird strike video later.

14th of May, i flew mutual flight with one of my friend FITRI. After he landed , i change to the left seat (CAPTAIN SEAT) :) took off again. Today something occur during our exercise. My classmate James he flew with Capt Saw. Their BOX1 machanical problem, all station at Sandakan frequency was trying to contact with them. But, still finally they manage to change to BOX 2 everything back to normal again.

I tried once before an ALTERNATOR FAILURE during my navigation solo flying with "EAGLE-150b aircraft i flown before i get my PPL license. Read my 1st post you will know" . I was so panic , suddenly a red light POP OUT. it shows an alternator failure. what is alternator ? when the engine started, current will be supply by an alternator. it's work similar with an alternator in your car.

The First thing came out my mind was to reset the circuit breaker
but it doesn't work. No worry, aircraft has battery itself but i know i doesn't lasting for very long. I try to reduce my electrical load and plan to head back to the airfield. I switched off my anti-collision lights and strobe lights but avionic master remain open i told the tower i had an alternator failure. Told them to expect my radio will not function later.

Tower copied. I told them my current position and Estimated time arrival to the airfield and of course request priority to land. They cleared me everything and asked me to maintain visually on ground and back to the airfield. GOSH, it was cloudy, i was operation at 4000 Ft. and i lost one of the most important instrument during the alternator failure. Without it , i have no confident to enter a cloud. It's the AH(artificial horizon). Luckily my instructors was flying dual flight with my classmate. Same route , he was ahead of me but he operated at 5000ft. i made a conversation with him through the radio. he told me to reset the circuit breaker again. He assumed me did not reset it properly because i was panic. i tried for my second attempt. That time, red warning light gone and everything back to normal. PHEW, i told tower everything backs to normal, and will heading back to the airfield. when i landed, i was so happy. My instructor told me not to panic next time. i answer him, i will not choose to have any problem. NO NEXT TIME . haha !
